Job Description

Position Summary:

The Executive Editor (EE) will play a critical role in fostering innovation and experimentation in a rapidly growing organization with the goal of revitalizing and building a sustainable model for professional journalism in the Bay Area.

To accomplish TNP’s mission, the Executive Editor will build a staff of dedicated TNP editors and reporters and will work collaboratively with journalists at KQED and UC Berkeley
to provide top quality, professionally produced news and public affairs content focused on the Bay Area.  Content from TNP will be developed and distributed primarily for online and mobile use, as well as through radio, television, and print outlets.

The EE leads the TNP team in creating a new model for sustainable journalism that advances the latest technology, and experiments with innovative ways of engaging and interacting with the public, while retaining journalistic values and best practices.  This individual will work closely with Northern California Public Broadcasting/KQED Content departments including Radio, TV and Interactive; the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism; and potentially a national newspaper for distribution.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Maintains editorial control over TNP content, subject to editorial guidelines developed by NCPB in consultation with TNP.
  2. Oversees the TNP journalistic enterprise, leveraging broad partnerships, new technologies, and innovations to create high quality news and distribute it widely and cost-effectively through a broad spectrum of distribution channels including online, mobile, broadcast and print. 
  3. Responsible for management/hiring of a professional multimedia news department.
  4. Develops content that is relevant to and valued by key TNP readers, listeners, viewers, and community stakeholders.
  5. Engages Bay Area residents broadly by providing content that is accessible to diverse audiences through new technologies and outreach efforts. 
  6. Determines editorial priorities – newsworthiness, key content areas of focus, and balance of news, enterprise reporting, investigations, commentary, social media and community-generated content. 
  7. Works closely with major collaborators to establish and then maximize workflow and content creation across platforms. Is accountable for editorial style, consistency and accuracy.  
  8. Establishes working collaboration with the faculty and students of the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and other campus schools and departments.
  9. Creates and oversees other editorial partnerships with key community groups (e.g., ethnic media, local bloggers, community news sites, other nonprofit news organizations and startups, and community newspapers) to develop and expand content relevant to the Bay Area. 
  10. In conjunction with the TNP Print Editor, develops and oversees relationship with potential print collaborator(s) and creation of content intended for print publication(s).      
  11. Maintains editorial guidelines for content and partnerships.  Ensures compliance for all content produced for KQED Radio and Television.  
  12. Identifies continuing training opportunities for expanding journalists’ skills to maximize cross-platform flow of content and innovation in content delivery.
  13. Manages and allocates operating and capital resources to meet annual expense and budgetary targets as set forth by the TNP CEO. 

 


Requirements

Knowledge/Experience Required:

  1. 7-10 years of news/editorial management, with experience in cross-platform and/or multimedia work. 
  2. Extensive experience in digital initiatives.
  3. Strong understanding of editorial principles and sound editorial judgment.
  4. Thorough knowledge of new media technology for content creation and distribution models.
  5. Ability to effectively collaborate and communicate across platforms sharing stories, information and additional content.
  6. Proven track record in engaging the public and building and growing readership, viewership, listenership, and/or online use.
  7. Demonstrated experience in fostering high standards, mentoring, communication and collaboration skills.
  8. Must have the ability to coach, inspire, and lead staff and other content contributors.
  9. Demonstrated knowledge of Bay Area demographic and regional diversity and of its political, economic and social institutions.

Knowledge/Experience Desired:

  1. Technology startup experience is a plus.
