Some things are a given. Like getting the chance to work with the latest applications and technology. And being surrounded by journalists who recognize the future is not just on the web. Here, as a paid online intern for the spring semester, you'll push your colleagues to do their best work. They'll turn around and do the same for you – all of which makes us the leading provider of news and information in Southwest Virginia. What matters is being able to use the best technologies to help a great company perform even better. As an online intern, you'll learn how to put your demonstrated technical skills into play as web presentations that tell a story in words, audio, photos and video. You'll work with our dayside delivery editor, the person who keeps the pulse on the news and our audience throughout the day, to present and deliver information, stories, updates and breaking news through our website, Twitter, Facebook, text messages, e-mail alerts and any other means that are appropriate to the story. You'll hone your news judgment skills and work in the fast-paced breaking news environment of the metro desk. You'll help us build and maintain pages on roanoke.com, keep the site fresh and updated and help us brainstorm new and innovative ways to tell stories online and beyond. You’ll help us as we take our information and stories beyond the homepage, directly to where our community orbits – in social networks, on their BlackBerries, in their laptops and beyond. You'll get a front-row seat and the chance to work closely with journalists throughout the newsroom on special projects, long-term stories, planning and microsite development. Have we piqued your interest? Fabulous. Then you'll love our beautiful location in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains and a casual work environment. This internship is available to current undergraduate and graduate students on a part-time or full-time basis during the spring semester of 2010. This person performs key roles in integrating the printed newspaper into its web pages -- and vice-versa. * Understands what's appropriate for the medium and knows how to take advantage of the Internet's innovative possibilities for telling a story. Thinking interactively is key. Readers should be able to use the site in many ways, with polls, message boards, databases. We want to increase reader participation and involvement. * What we require: some understanding of/experience with (X)HTML, CSS, Photoshop, multimedia production, content management systems, social media, web aesthetics and online storytelling. Requirements for consideration for this internship include several examples of work in your portfolio and a serious interest and enthusiasm to develop your skills.
