Job Description |
 |
Commonweal Magazine, the distinguished independent journal of opinion edited and managed by lay Catholics, is seeking a digital editor/producer to take on day-to-day responsibility for growing Commonweal’s presence and readership online. The digital editor will be responsible for: - Developing short-term and long-term goals for site traffic, audience growth, and reader engagement, as well as plans for enhancements to the site’s content, features, design, and technology
- Working with the entire editorial team to originate and commission original, Commonweal-quality digital content
- Posting new and updated selections of stories on the site and presenting them effectively
- Overseeing and maximizing the effectiveness of social media channels and the site’s SEO efforts
- Authoring and sending regular (at least three times weekly) editorial e-mail updates to the site’s subscribers and readers
- Managing and updating the site’s topic pages
- Management and expansion of the site’s tagging/keyword taxonomy
- Finding and editing graphics
- Serving as principal day-to-day contact with the site’s developers and hosting provider
The digital editor will work regularly with Commonweal’s other editors to stay up to date on the print magazine’s contents and upcoming coverage, as well as to generate ideas for the site.

Additional Salary Information: Salary will be commensurate with experience. The position is full time, although the office operates on a four-day work week (Mon-Thurs), and full-time presence in the office is not required.

Requirements |
 |
The position requires at least three to five years of experience in online editing and journalism and/or online marketing, including hands-on experience with content management, e-mail platforms, and social media. Strong and proven writing and proofreading skills are necessary. Demonstrated interest in the religious, political, and cultural debates that make up Commonweal’s editorial focus is a must.
