The Visual Journalism Program at Brooks Institute challenges students to be globally aware, creative, collaborative and adaptive. Our responsibility is to teach the value of storytelling, the grass root fundamentals of journalism and a broad range of media applications. Our multi-disciplinary approach promotes collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity to develop graduates who are technically adept and visually sophisticated with high standards of professional ethics. Our program is unique, in that Visual Journalism students can draw on the knowledge of our various programs in film, professional photography and graphic design. The Program Chair should ideally have a strong background in these areas, including traditional and emerging visual journalism skills. They should also have the vision for visual journalism globally, and knowledge of delivery options including print, web and emerging new media. The Program Director is responsible for the adjunct and full-time instructors’ accountability to the curriculum, consistency and support of the critical studies sequence within Visual Journalism curriculum. They are also responsible for instructing and supervising students, assisting in development of course outline, materials and teaching techniques collaborating with Department Chair and Program Chairs in other areas.

Requirements |

- Teach 6 courses per year.
- Lead curriculum and faculty meetings within the Visual Journalism department.
- Prepare, introduce new curriculum/classes, changes for approval at Academic Council.
- Present subject matter to students using appropriate teaching techniques and materials in order to make students knowledgeable in the areas taught.
- Review materials for instructional use in Visual Journalism including handouts and presentations, exams, quizzes, and classroom and homework assignments to ensure relevancy and consistency.
- Establish, provide and enforce guidelines for each class taught under his/her jurisdiction, per the established curriculum.
- Collaborate with Visual Journalism faculty to provide a detailed sample course outline for each course offered within the sequence.
- Develop Visual Journalism curriculum, maintain integrity of sequence at direction of Department Chair
- Participate in Academic Council and ensure two faculty from your area participate in campus committees as identified. Must participate in a minimum of two ongoing committees not including curriculum committee or departmental meetings or Academic Council.
- Assist, recruit, interview and recommend new faculty for search committees convened by Department Chair, School of Film and Communication.
- Mentor or assign mentors to new faculty for consistency in curriculum accountability in Visual Journalism core sequence.
- Recommend faculty teaching assignments each session, approval by Dept. Chair
- Monitor adjunct and full time faculty for professional developmental needs and provide documentation for faculty files and accreditation.
- Perform in-class observations and performance evaluations.
- Participate in accreditation preparation and implementation, assessment of outcomes for Visual Journalism and attend assessment summits.
- Provide office hours or opportunities for student/faculty discussion at the rate of 2.25 hours per course per week taught. (i.e. 2 courses X 2.25= 4.5 hrs. per week)
- Attend or facilitate open houses, orientations, workshops or other events for students of the Visual Journalism department, minimum of 1 per semester. Attend a minimum of 3 graduations/receptions per year.
- Ability to align department and individual goals with school strategic plan
