The Lafayette Journal & Courier, an award-winning digital and print news organization in northwest Indiana, seeks a dynamic, collaborative City Editor to join our team and lead a staff of seven talented reporters. You may be the right candidate for this job if you have a passion for telling stories, a hunger for facts, boundless curiosity about why things are the way they are and a zeal for teaching and mentoring fellow journalists.
You should be a nimble conductor, able to plan daily, weekly and long-term story schedules yet comfortable switching things up at a moment's notice. You are brimming with creativity, story ideas and novel angles -- and you love helping less-experienced journalists hone their ideas. You're an inspirational team leader as well as a quick study who can see a community through fresh eyes. You think digitally, figuring out the best way to tell every story in print or on a desktop browser, mobile device or tablet utilizing a palette of digital and graphical tools. You want to be the first to break news but you also value longer, deeper dives. And, of course, you're a skilled line editor who can spot holes, massage ledes and make flat stories sing -- but also step out of the way when a story hits all the right notes.
Basically, you need to be comfortable keeping a bunch of plates spinning at the same time, without letting any of them drop.
You’ll be joining a scrappy, energetic newsroom that’s reinventing the definition of modern journalism in a vibrant community that’s home to Purdue University. We consistently punch above our weight class—last year, for example, the Journal & Courier was named the Blue Ribbon best newspaper in the state by the Hoosier State Press Association, and our walls are groaning with all the other awards we have won for our innovative brand of storytelling.
